Short and interesting tour to discover the ancient rock writings of the shepherds of the Val di Fiemme.

For many centuries, the steep mountain sides above the valley’ towns have been used to graze goats and sheep. Today, the rock writings on the sides of Mount Cornon and Pizzancae are proof of this old habit. The writings date back to a period between the 15th and 20th century.

Did you know? The shepherds’ writings were made with hematite (red ocher) mixed with saliva or goat or sheep milk. A stick, whose tip was chewed or softened with a stone, was used as a paint brush. The writings mostly include the shepherd’s initials, the year and the number of grazing sheep and goats.

Starting point
Parking behind the Agritur Valaverta
Directions

After parking in the clearing, we set off on the dirt/rock road which after a few metres bends to the right and continues steadily uphill. After a short flat stretch, you will notice the sign LE SCRITTE DEI PASTORI indicating to take path no. 509. Then another sign indicates to leave the uphill path and turn right, passing the stream. The path zigzags its way uphill through the forest. The path then becomes relatively flat, with ups and downs at the foot of the rock faces. The vegetation opens up and on the right, the village of Ziano di Fiemme can be seen below, overlooked by the forests of the Lagorai chain. As you continue along the path, you will notice on the walls to the left the curious shepherds' symbols and reddish initials. The path then descends steeply until it reaches the forest road. Continue to the right, arriving at the junction of the path taken on the outward journey and after a short while at a fork to the left that descends directly to the car park.

How to get there

Reach the village of Ziano di Fiemme and head towards Agritur Valaverta  (holiday farm). Continue along the road until you find a clearing on the right where you can park.

Where to park
