The Bletterbach Gorge presents itself as an open book, where scientists, geology enthusiasts, and families with children interested in nature can leaf through more than 40 million years of Earth’s history.

A Look into the Past at Passo Oclini
Saturday, August 30, 2025, starting at 9:00 PM
During the night hike up to the viewpoint at Passo Oclini, astronomy and geology enthusiasts will not look into the deep Bletterbach Gorge but will direct their gaze upwards to see the starry sky above the White Horn. With the help of two telescopes, together with David Gruber, director of the South Tyrol Museum of Natural Sciences, and Brigitte Lintner from the amateur astronomers’ group “Max Valier,” you can observe the moon and its craters, the planets Saturn and Jupiter, the Milky Way, and – with a bit of luck – shooting stars. Geologist Benno Baumgarten from the South Tyrol Museum of Natural Sciences will explain the geological peculiarities of the planets, since the UNESCO World Heritage Dolomites have more in common with the starry sky than one might think at first glance. An impressive outdoor exhibition in front of the Aldino Visitor Center shows the similarities between the Bletterbach and Mars; it can be visited before the event.
